Flock of Thais and foreigners are coming to Cha-Am for the 13th festival of shell eating, bird watching and squid fishing at the Cha-Am lookout between 24 September and 2 October.
Organized by the Tourism Authority of Thailand’s Petchaburi Office, the Cha-Am Municipality and the Boonrawd Brewery Public Company Limited’s the Marketing Division, this event aims to promote tourism in Cha-Am in low season. Well-known among tourists as it has taken place for 13 times already, it offers fun travel experiences and several unforgettable activities hardly found elsewhere in Thailand.

Mr. Chai Panichpornpan, the Petchaburi Governor, said that Petchaburi is one of the highest potential provinces in Thailand in terms of tourism thanks to its various natural resources, unique culture and interesting historical background. The province also boasts many royal initiative projects from which people can learn as well as complete accommodations and convenient location close to Bangkok.

These make Petchaburi a precious gem of Thailand.
In terms of Cha-Am, a district of Petchaburi, it is an important tourist spot of the province and Thailand as a whole. Each year, over 4 million tourists visit the area, boosting local economy to the province a lot. Organizing tourism promotion activities like this festival is a good way to allow local people to earn more income, added Mr. Chai.

The Cha-Am Mayor Mr. Nukul Pornsomboonsiri, as an organizing chair of the festival, said that the Municipality of Cha-Am provided visitors with international quality on event organizing. Throughout the event, the central stage will have performances of various artists. At the Cha-Am lookout, visitors can savor good food and drink. Those who want to fish squid can do so at 7 p.m. every day on a fishing boat by paying only 100 Baht charge – the cheapest price for tourists. Fishing boats will be moored beside the Cha- Am lookout on the southern part.

Birdwatchers can take a free trip to Khao Nang Phanthurat hill and Thung Takad Phlee to see local and migrating birds. The trip, taking place twice daily – 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. – can be booked at a tent on the north of the Cha-Am lookout.

On 24 September – the first and the opening day of the festival, a fair of One-Tambon- One-Product (OTOP) goods was launched together with boat racing from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Cha-Am Mayor said that he was confident that the festival would come out very well as it had been held for the 13th times already. Besides, organizers and sponsors for the event know how to prepare everything. So, all visitors will be happy and enjoy great experience there.

The Director of the Tourism Authority of Thailand’s Petchaburi Office Ms. Nongnit Tengmaneewan talked about the festival that the TAT, which has continuously supported it since the first time, would be pleased to co-organize the event again next year because a lot of visitors enjoyed it so much despite the low season. So, the TAT would like to invite tourists to come back to Cha-Am and attend the festival again next year.

Mr. Somchai Paerungrotthawee, the manager of the Boonrawd Brewery Public Company Limited’s the Marketing Division, said that the company was glad to be a co-organizer of the festival because it was a Thai company which supported and took pride of diverse Thai tradition and culture. Boonrawd has continuously sponsored this event as it symbolizes unique Thai lifestyle, especially the way of living in coastal Thailand.

An unmissible event of Cha-Am, the shell eating, bird watching and squid fishing festival will be an unforgettable memory for those who attend it, too. For more information, please contact the Cha-Am Municipality at tel. 032 471 665.

Giving closing remarks for this event, Mr. Chomporn Saengmanee, Deputy Governor of Phetchaburi, said that the province was well-equipped in all aspects, especially tourism. Holding the Jet Ski championship this year manifests the strength of Phetchaburi on organizing a big sport event to promote tourism in the province and in Cha-Am.
Promoting tourism in Cha-Am is a major task of the Cha-Am Municipality. In doing so, local people here will earn more from their business. The Thailand Jet Ski Championship is an event which plays a key role on using sport to promote tourism in the city, concluded the Cha-Am Mayor Mr. Nukul Pornsomboonsiri.
Afterwards, the participants will visit Wat Cha-Am Khiri Buddhist Temple, an oldest Buddhist monastery in Cha-Am which has very long Naga-shaped stairs leading up to a cave. Inside the cave, visitors can pay respect to a Buddha image made of sand stone and admire Cha-Am in breathtaking panoramic views. Next, the participants will visit Cha- Am Child Care Center, a unique bridge over a canal by the Wat Cha-Am and the Takian goddess shrine. The trip back to the Cha-Am beach passes a big reservoir, verdant paddy fields and old windmills.

With a three thousand seat stadium being built and entrance to watch the games free of charge, this year’s event promises to be the biggest ever.
New editions such as the Chang Noi Children’s Day, an opening parade with army brass bands, Thailand’s last elephant spirit men, and traditional dancers will entertain the crowds. To celebrate a different perspective, a worldwide search for a ‘Roving Elephant Reporter’ aged between 7 – 15 years old has also been launched.

The winner of Anantara’s hunt for a ‘Roving Elephant Reporter’ will become a star of the elephant polo circuit, delivering international coverage of the captivating games from a VIP pitch-side seat.
Lastly, fifteen celebrities have also been invited to paint and decorate an elephant replica which will be auctioned off for charity at the final gala dinner.
The event will also see a number of teams go trunk to trunk to win the coveted King’s Cup trophy. The tournament was introduced to Thailand in 2001 by Anantara Hotels, Resorts & Spas and is a charitable event that raises money for the benefit of all Thailand’s elephants. To date the tournament has raised over US$300,000 primarily for the National Elephant Institute.

TAT Steps Up Promotions for Golf in a Kingdom

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is to adopt a high-profile presence at the North America Golf Tourism Convention to be organised by the International Association of Golf Tour Operators (IAGTO) between May 18 – 21, 2011, Monterey County, California.

Thailand is the only Asian country to be featured as a major sponsor of this event. With more than 100 buyers of golf tourism expected to participate, TAT plans to make full use of this opportunity to disseminate information about the kingdom’s amazing golf facilities, expand its range of contacts and boost networking with golf operators worldwide.

Mrs Juthaporn Rerngronasa, TAT Deputy Governor for International Marketing (Europe and the Americas), said, “This year, we have set a strategy to expand quality tourists in the American region by stepping up our promotions of the golf tourism market.”

“This is due to the fact that golfers still have high spending power. In times of recurring and unpredictable crisis every week and a highly competitive market, the TAT needs to continue to attract market segments which still have the desire and the means to travel. Golf tourism is one such segment.”

Set up in 1997 with headquarters in London, IAGTO has a membership of 1,600 companies from 82 countries. Its membership has expanded in recent years to include golf resorts, golf courses, hotels, specialist ground handlers, car rental and transportation companies, airlines, tourist boards, media, and a wide range of business partners who provide services for the golf tourism industry. Late last year, TAT organised a familiarisation trip for 22 golf tour operators, all members of IAGTO, to survey golf courses in Bangkok, Pattaya, Hua Hin and Chiang Mai.

According to IAGTO, its membership includes 370 golf tour operators from 51 countries who only sell golfing holidays. Of these, 144 companies sell golf tours to Thailand. Mrs Juthaporn said, “The IAGTO has stressed that Thailand has great potential to expand its profile among the rest of the golfing operators who are not yet selling Thailand. We will work with IAGTO more intensively in the future to find ways to cooperate in promoting the golf market.”

In addition to cooperation with IAGTO, TAT also participated in the PGA Merchandise Show in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, last January. The event was attended by nearly 42,000 PGA professionals and industry executives from 88 countries and nearly every U.S. state.

Two marketing activities targetted at the golf sector are under way in Thailand between 20-29 March.

A group of 16 golf industry journalists from the United States, Canada, UK, Italy, Sweden and Denmark have been invited on a fam trip that will take them to some of the popular golf courses of Bangkok, Pattaya, Hua Hin and Chiang Mai.

A group of 10 Teaching Professional Golfers from USA are also visiting Thailand to survey the golf courses and supporting facilities and services, and also get ideas for organising golf holiday packages. Golfing has become a major component of Thailand’s increasingly diverse tourism product. There are over 200 high standard golf courses nationwide, many of them championship level designed by the world’s top designers; such as, Jack Nicklaus, Robert Trent Jones Jr, and many others. The result is some of the most attractive courses in Asia, with excellent facilities, memorable signature holes and regular maintenance to keep them in top-class condition.

There are at least a few courses in or within easy reach of all major cites. Most of the newer courses offer accommodation on site or nearby, plus recreational facilities for the whole family. For the more adventurous, there are older, natural courses in remote areas around the country, all offering good value.

So for golfers who not only appreciate a challenging course, but an exotically different one too, there is an extraordinary choice.
