You can make money online fast if you look in the right places. That is the catch that keeps most people who want to make money from doing so. Instead, they look at the wrong places and end up falling for frauds and schemes to just separate them from more of their money instead of letting them earn some.

The best way to fall into fraud is to believe that you can make money fast online and get rich soon. Of course there are plenty of people who make a good living online doing various things. Whether through free lancing, Internet business, websites, marketing and other methods, many people earn their living completely online. It is legitimate to make money online but it ain´t anything fast.

A few people have gotten a lot of money online and scams love to refer to those and try to convince you to do the same. The people that became wealthy are in the minority. Yet many people fall prey to the scammers and frauds who claim they can make them rich fast but than just end up losing hundreds to thousands of whatever fast as well.

You have to be practical to look for an income over the Internet. Be reasonable and don’t dream of millions which you won’t make anyway. Look for jobs and services which pay without you having to pay them upfront or paying to retrieve the information. Companies, for example, will pay you for surveys without you having to pay them. Filling out special offers by companies answering polls and giving them detailed information are also ways to make some money online.

Take a close look at what is requested and how it is remunerated. Don’t fall for fraud with payments upfront or investments which than disappear into someone else’s bank account!

LED lighting Technique for your home

Led lighting saves electricity.

The lighting efficiency of the new high power led light bulbs ismore than eight times that of incandescent lights, and twice as high as compact fluorescent lights. Led bulbs also emit a much higher percentage of light in the desired direction. This makes them even more efficient compared to either incandescent or fluorescent for task lighting, desk lamps, reading lights, spotlights, flood lights, and track lighting. With colored LED lights there is simply no comparison. All of the light output from led bulbs can be in a specific color. With other light sources, much of the light produced consists of unwanted colors which are filtered out. This wastes energy. Led lights produce pure color (monochromatic light) which requires no filtering. Led lights also generate very little unwanted heat. The energy savings may be doubled in air-conditioned environments where each watt of incandescent lighting can add another watt or more to the power needed for air conditioning. The EPA encourages the use of innovative light source technologies such as led light bulbs.

Led lighting instantly acheives full brightness with no warm up time. Fluorescent lights are dim when first turned on, and get brighter as they warm up. Depending on the temperature and the age of the lamp, they can take a long time to warm up. If it is cold enough they will not warm up at all. Led lights always start at full brightness. Led lighting does not contain mercury.Fluorescent lights contain mercury and must be treated as hazardous waste Led lighting contains no mercury or other dangerous substances. Led lighting does not produce any ultraviolet (UV) light. Led lights emit no damaging ultraviolet light, so they will not cause fading and aging of artwork or other sensitive materials. Fluorescent and halogen lights can cause significant damage over time.

Led lighting saves on bulb replacement. Led bulbs can operate for 30,000 hours or more. One led lightbulb can easily outlast 30 incandescent bulbs, or 6 compact fluorescents! Led bulbs cost less than the bulbs they replace. Operating 8 hours per day, led light bulbs can last 10 years or more! Led light bulbs are less sensitive to shock, vibration, and the extreme temperature changes that can quickly ruin fragile incandescent bulbs. And unlike fluorescent bulbs which wear out much faster if they are frequently turned on and off, led bulbs are not affected by frequent on-off switching. The long life of led light bulbs reduce the time, effort and cost of replacement.

Led lighting increases safety and security. The high reliability of led lights increases safety and security. There is no waiting for led light bulbs to warm up. Led bulbs light up instantly at full brightness, even in the coldest weather. Led lights are safer.Led bulbs operate at much lower temperatures. Halogen and incandescent lights are hot enough to cause fire, and they frequently do. And finally… Led is much easier to spell than either incandescent or fluorescent.

TOKYO (AP) — Mazda Motor Corp. sank into the red in the October-December quarter, unable to overcome a stronger yen and lackluster sales in Japan.

The Japanese automaker said Thursday it booked a quarterly net loss of 2.67 billion yen ($32.7 million). It had net profit of 4.42 billion yen a year earlier.

Revenue inched up 0.5 percent to 560.24 billion yen ($6.9 billion) while operating profit slid 90 percent to 1.05 billion yen ($12.9 million).

Demand for cars in Japan fell sharply in the quarter after government subsidies for green car purchases expired, Mazda said. It also cited foreign exchange losses and higher sales costs.

The Hiroshima-based car maker said it is implementing steps to boost profitability across the company, including expanding sales in China, Thailand and other emerging markets.

Mazda, whose models include the Miata roadster and RX-8 sportscar, is a relatively small player in the auto industry, with a 5 percent market share in Japan and a 2 percent share in the U.S.

In December, Ford cut its stake in Mazda from 11 percent to 3.5 percent, marking a symbolic shift in a longtime U.S.-Japan auto alliance.

In contrast to bigger rivals such as Toyota Motor Corp. and Nissan Motor Co., Mazda is taking a slower path when it comes to hybrid and electric cars. It has high hopes for its next-generation gasoline and diesel engines that feature significantly improved fuel efficiency. The technology will make its debut this year in the Demio, which can reach 30 kilometers per liter (75 miles per gallon).

Mazda left its outlook for the year ending March 2011 unchanged. It continues to forecast net profit of 6 billion yen on revenue of 2.3 trillion yen.

The company reported earnings after financial markets closed. In trading Thursday, Mazda’s shares fell 2.5 percent on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, worse than the Nikkei 225 stock average’s 0.3 percent decline.

Mazda bases its earnings on Japanese accounting standards.

NEW YORK (AP) — The appointment of a German software executive as Hewlett-Packard Co.’s next CEO sends an unmistakable signal that the board of the world’s largest technology company is prepared to gamble big on an aggressive push into the software business.

And analysts say it will need to do just that to avoid being left behind in its core personal computer and printer businesses that no longer offer much room for growth or big profits.

In a conference call that served as his formal introduction to Wall Street on Friday, former SAP AG CEO Leo Apotheker called software the "glue" that will hold together the different parts of the company. "Software is how we can make sure that the various parts of our technology actually fit well together," he said.

Even before his comments, it was telling enough that HP didn’t choose the head of its PC or printer businesses — the company’s traditional strengths — and instead tapped an executive who has spent more than two decades in the business software industry and far from Silicon Valley.

"HP is in the midst of a transformation," says R. "Ray" Wang, a partner at Altimeter Group LLC. "If they don’t make the move into software in the next three to five years, they’re going to find themselves in a really commoditized PC business with high volume and low profit margins."

The choice of Apotheker could cut both ways. He has no experience with consumer products, which make up a sizable portion of HP’s business. He also faces the challenge of holding together a group of managers at HP that has turned the company’s computers and printers into industry leaders. Some of those executives were passed over for the CEO job, which could turn them into potential defectors, analysts say.

"These are tricky waters to be navigating," IDC analyst Crawford del Prete said. "Job No. 1 has to be solidifying this team."

Wall Street isn’t convinced that Apotheker, 57, is the right pick. HP’s shares fell $1.30, or 3.1 percent, to close Friday at $40.77.

The debacle over former CEO Mark Hurd, who was forced out over allegations of sexual harassment and deceptive expense reports, sent HP’s stock down more than 15 percent in the weeks after his departure on Aug. 6.

Apotheker has an international background. His parents escaped the Nazis, then settled in Aachen, Germany, after World War II. The family moved to Antwerp, Belgium, after he was born in 1953. After high school, Apotheker moved to Israel, earnings a B.A. in economics and international relations at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. He speaks five languages: English, Dutch, German, Hebrew and French.

In 1988, Apotheker began his career at SAP, which provides software that helps carry out a range of business functions, from tracking inventory to logging sales. He remained at the company for more than 20 years, founding and serving as head of SAP France and SAP Belgium.

He was promoted to co-CEO in April 2008, just as the recession started crimping business investment. To bolster revenue, the company announced an increase in maintenance fees. But customers protested, and SAP had to postpone the increase. He was also identified with the delay of a new software system. This led to his ouster in February of this year, but in other respects, he gets good marks from German commentators.

His abrupt departure from SAP aside, it is easy to see why HP feels it needs someone with a background in software.

Big companies and government agencies these days want to deal with technology venders that provide the whole package of computers, software and services rather than dealing with the headache of putting it all together on their own. And the software piece of that equation is shaping up to be a much faster-growing, profitable business than hardware.

HP’s own financial results bear that out. Its existing software business contributed just 2.8 percent of the company’s $30.7 billion in revenue for quarter that ended July 31. But it was the company’s most profitable segment, with a 21 percent operating margin. That compares to 4.7 percent in PCs.

With its own software business still small, HP will have to resort to acquisitions if it wants to build serious scale, the same way it bought Electronic Data Systems in 2008 to double its services business. Speculation is mounting that it might attempt to buy SAP.

HP will face stiff competition from other tech heavyweights looking to position themselves as the leading one-stop shop for information technology.

One is Oracle Corp., a former ally that jumped into the hardware business against HP this year with the acquisition of Sun Microsystems. The competition with Oracle is all the more bitter because the company’s CEO, Larry Ellison, decided to snap up Hurd last month to serve as Oracle’s president. HP sued to try keeping him out of the job, but has settled the case.

HP, based in Palo Alto, Calif., said Thursday that it will also be bringing in an Oracle alumnus to help lead the company. Venture capitalist Ray Lane, who was ejected from Oracle’s No. 2 job by Ellison a decade ago, is joining HP as nonexecutive chairman.

The escalating rivalry could lead to bidding wars between HP and Oracle for smaller software players as both companies bulk up, said Caris & Co. analyst Curtis Shauger. "The gloves are off," he said.

IBM is another tech powerhouse making software acquisitions. Just last week, the company agreed to pay $1.7 billion for Netezza Corp., a company that helps businesses sort through data on corporate servers. IBM says it has made more than $12 billion worth of acquisitions in just that particular niche of the software industry over the past few years.

Apotheker is the third HP CEO in a row to be recruited from outside the company. Carly Fiorina came from Lucent, an AT&T spinoff. Hurd came from NCR Corp. The lack of promotions for top internal managers could encourage them to look for opportunities elsewhere.

Todd Bradley, whom analysts pegged as one of the leading internal prospects, would be a heavy loss, said Gleacher & Co. analyst Brian Marshall.

Bradley took over the company’s PC business when it was in tatters and has managed to boost its margins. He upgraded HP’s image with the celebrity-studded "The Computer is Personal Again" ad campaign soon after he was hired and cut costs. Within three years, HP outgunned Dell Inc. to snag the title of the world’s No. 1 PC maker.

"He’s done a great job. He definitely was on the short list," Marshall said.

Apotheker struck a conciliatory tone toward his new colleagues on Friday.

"The first thing I did when I joined this company was to reach out to each member of the senior executive team," he said. "We have talked. These are great professionals. They have HP in their blood and I am sure that as a team we will be working together for many years and do a great job."

OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) — The state that produced America’s richest man has never taken a cut of its residents’ income. Microsoft Corp. co-founder Bill Gates and his father would like to change that.

They are among the wealthy Washingtonians who have joined labor unions and other traditional Democratic allies to support a tax-the-rich ballot measure that is dividing the state’s business leaders. Executives at Microsoft, Amazon.com and other technology companies have come out against it.

The initiative will test whether voters are willing to buck economic jitters and drain money from their rich neighbors at a time when national Democrats and Republicans have been waging an intense election-year battle over the merits of taxing the wealthy.

Washington’s measure, known as Initiative 1098, would institute a new state tax on the top 1 percent of incomes to pay for education and health programs while trimming state property and business taxes. The campaign follows January’s overwhelming decision by Oregon voters to increase taxes for corporations and wealthier households.

While his famous son’s public support has so far been quiet, Bill Gates Sr., a prominent Seattle lawyer, helped to draft Washington’s income tax initiative and is the public face of the campaign.

In recent TV ad, the elder Gates is knocked into a dunk tank by softball-tossing children — a playful approach to the idea that the measure will "soak the rich." Gates counters by highlighting the billions of dollars the income tax would generate for education and health care programs.

"It’s really about doing something for the next generation," Gates says before taking the plunge.

The initiative sets out two tax brackets. The first rate is 5 percent on the portion of adjusted gross income higher than $400,000 for couples, or $200,000 for individuals.

For joint incomes above $1 million, the tax would be $30,000 plus 9 percent on earnings over the threshold. Single earners above $500,000 would pay $15,000 plus 9 percent of income above the threshold.

State officials say I-1098 would raise more than $2 billion annually from fewer than 40,000 households, or 1.2 percent of Washingtonians filing federal returns. At present, Washington is one of seven states without a personal income tax.

The $4.3 million "yes" campaign is bankrolled largely by labor unions, particularly those representing government employees — more than $1.7 million has come from various arms of the Service Employees International Union. Individual donors include Gates Sr., who has given $500,000, and venture capitalist Nick Hanauer, who has donated $250,000.

But plenty of big-name business leaders are unhappy with the idea.

Amazon.com founder Jeff Bezos and Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer each have donated $100,000 to the $4 million opposition campaign, which also has drawn contributions from Russell Investments, Paccar Inc., software billionaire Charles Simonyi and members of the Nordstrom family.

Opponents stress that state lawmakers could lower the income thresholds with a simple majority vote two years after the initiative is enacted, and point out that state officials routinely raid "dedicated" spending accounts in lean years.

They also add that, in a time of terribly slow job growth, taking more money from entrepreneurs and businesspeople could seriously crimp the state’s economic rebound.

The privacy of tax returns makes it impossible to say how much the state’s marquee business names might pay under the initiative, but the tax would apply to personal earnings from partnerships, shares in small corporations, capital gains and other non-salary sources of income.

Right now, Washington’s lack of income tax can be a major recruitment point for businesses and talent looking to relocate, said Joe Barer, president of management consulting firm Lake Partners.

"I don’t think people come here just for the weather," said Barer, who has donated to the opposition campaign. "I’ve personally recruited people, and part of the pitch is, ‘Yes it’s a great place to live — and we have no income tax.’"

Hanauer, one of the earliest Amazon.com investors and founder of the online ad company aQuantive, sees the economics differently. In his judgment, the kind of wealth at stake in the initiative could do far more good for the economy by bankrolling public school teachers and other vital services.

"If you look at the money that somebody like me — or Jeff Bezos or Steve Ballmer — where our cash flow goes, it’s crazy to assert that the highest and best use is in our bank accounts, or in the hedge funds that we’ve parked it in, or as jet fuel in our private planes," Hanauer said. "It’s just nuts."

Liberals have been hoping the measure’s populist appeal would help drive friendly turnout in a political year that could be brutal for Democrats. But voters don’t appear wildly enthusiastic.

A recent survey by independent Seattle pollster Stuart Elway pegged support for the income tax initiative essentially tied with the opposition, 44 percent to 42 percent. The poll of 500 likely voters had a margin of sampling error of about 4.5 percent.

High-profile politicians also have been reluctant to participate in the debate, probably because the public appears so uncertain. For instance, the initiative has not been an issue in the state’s top election contest, a heated race between Democratic Sen. Patty Murray and Republican challenger Dino Rossi.

Income tax measures have been attempted over the years in Washington with little success.

Voters have defeated attempts to amend the state constitution for a state income tax, most recently in 1973, and the topic has often been considered a political loser since then.

REDMOND, Wash. (AP) — Microsoft Corp. is suing Motorola Inc. for infringing on its smart-phone patents.

The software maker on Friday said Motorola phones that use Google Inc.’s Android software step on Microsoft technology. The functions in question include synchronizing e-mail, calendars and contacts.

Microsoft filed its lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington. It also filed a claim with the International Trade Commission.

Microsoft said Motorola licensed some of its mobile technology from 2003 to 2007, but did not renew the license even as the handset maker continued to use the technology.

This isn’t the first move Microsoft has made to protect its mobile patents. In April, it announced licensing agreement with another Android phone maker, Taiwan’s HTC Corp.

A spokeswoman for Schaumburg, Ill.-based Motorola said the company has not seen the lawsuit and therefore can’t comment on its contents.

"Motorola has a leading intellectual property portfolio, one of the strongest in the industry, and we will vigorously defend ourself in this matter," spokeswoman Jennifer Erickson said.

Erickson declined to comment on Microsoft’s assertion that the company licensed the technology in the past, but has since let the license lapse.

NEW YORK (AP) — Facebook, the world’s largest online social network, said Friday it is splitting its shares five for one, so that it can give larger stock grants to current and prospective employees.

The split doesn’t change the actual value of these grants, however.

Spokesman Larry Yu says the split made sense as Facebook’s valuation has grown. The split brings Facebook shares’ value closer to what might be expected for a privately held company, he says.

Facebook isn’t disclosing the value of its shares. The stock was recently trading between $72 and $76 on SharesPost, a secondary stock market. This values Facebook at up to $33.7 billion.

Such markets let stockholders sell shares before a company goes public. But those prices don’t necessarily reflect how the stock would trade on public exchanges.

This is the third time Facebook has split its shares. Yu said the first time was in July 2006 and the second was in October 2007.

TOKYO (AP) — China’s recent halt of exotic metal shipments to Japan amid a diplomatic spat has reverberated throughout the world’s high-tech manufacturing hubs — now on heightened alert to the risks of relying on one country for materials that do everything from helping hybrid engines run to creating the color red in televisions.

Governments as far afield as Washington and Seoul are asking: What happens if China cuts off our supply too?

Like the rest of the world, Japan depends almost entirely on shipments from China, which produces 97 percent of the global supply of the metals known as rare earths.

As tensions over islands claimed by both Japan and China ran high last month, Japanese companies reported that China had halted shipments of rare earths — 17 exotic minerals critical for advanced manufacturing. Hybrid car engines, like those in Toyota’s Prius, need lanthanum. Europium creates the color red in televisions. The electric generators in wind turbines use neodynium.

"Some countries have started taking steps to seek various options," Japan’s new Foreign Minister Seiji Maehara said Friday. "I think it is quite a healthy development for each country to start resource diplomacy after developing a sense of crisis because of the latest incident."

China’s virtual monopoly is no accident. Former Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping once famously quipped that while the Middle East had oil, China had rare earths. The U.S. led the world in rare earth production until the late 1980s. Since then, however, China has grown to dominate the market by undercutting other producers with lower prices.

Annual global production of rare earth elements totals about 124,000 tons, according to a July report by the U.S. Congressional Research Service. World demand is expected to rise to 180,000 tons a year by 2012. By 2014, global demand could exceed 200,000 tons per year, according to the report.

Concern about rare earth supply had been brewing long before September’s restrictions to Japan, which Beijing still denies. To cope with growing demand at home, China has been reducing export quotas of rare earths over the past several years. In the second half of this year, the government has capped overseas shipments at 7,976 tons, down 49 percent from the first half, according to figures from China’s Ministry of Commerce.

Although shipments appear to have resumed, the issue has become a political priority in Japan, where the vital auto industry has invested heavily in hybrid and electric cars — among the biggest consumers of rare earths — to drive growth.

Jack Lifton, an independent consultant, speaker and author on rare earths, says Japan has the most to fear from Chinese import restrictions.

When it comes to high-tech goods, "anything that’s not made in China is made in Japan," said the Michigan-based Lifton, who has advised the Japanese government on the issue.

On Friday, Tokyo released a set of "comprehensive rare earth measures" to ensure a stable supply for Japanese industry.

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry outlined five main areas of focus, including speeding development of rare earth alternatives, turning Japan into a major global center for rare earth recycling and helping manufacturers install equipment to reduce rare earth consumption. The government will also support Japanese companies in acquiring concession rights to rare earth mines outside of China and study the possibility of stockpiling rare earth reserves.

Japan announced a new accord with Mongolia the following day. At a meeting between Prime Minister Naoto Kan and Mongolian Prime Minister Sukhbaatar Batbold, the two countries agreed to cooperate in developing rare earth mines in Mongolia.

The new partnership comes on top of ongoing projects launched recently by major Japanese companies seeking to diversify their rare earth sources.

Toyota Motor Corp. said last week it set up a rare earth task force. An affiliated trading company, Toyota Tsusho Corp., established a rare earth mining joint venture in Vietnam two years ago.

"There are many risks in depending on one nation," company spokesman Morimasa Konishi said.

The company expects the Vietnam mine to begin supplying minerals to Japan in 2012, he said. Toyota Tsusho has also invested in a similar project in India, which should begin operating next year.

Toshiba Corp. and Sumitomo Corp. have each launched rare earth joint ventures in Kazakhstan over the past year. Australia’s Lynas Corp. said last week that it had signed a deal to supply a major Japanese company with rare earths from its Mount Weld project in western Australia. Lynas did not name the company and said it was in talks with other firms in the U.S., Japan and Europe.

South Korea — home of tech giants Samsung Electronics Co. and LG Electronics Inc. — has taken notice of its neighbors’ dispute.

It plans to spend 17 billion won ($15 million) by 2016 as part of a long-term plan that seeks to secure 1,200 metric tons in rare earths reserves, the Ministry of Knowledge Economy said in a statement.

Seoul expects prices to climb and supplies to become increasingly unstable, as its main supplier China consistently decreases exports, the statement said.

The policy plan, titled "Plans for Stable Procurement of Rare Metals," will be finalized in mid-October, after further consultations, the ministry said. The plan will include strategies on developing domestic mines and investing into research for alternative materials and recycling technologies.

And in the U.S., legislation to jump start domestic rare earth production appears to be gaining momentum.

At a Senate subcommittee hearing last week, lawmakers expressed concern that the U.S. was so reliant on China. David Sandalow, assistant secretary of energy for policy and international affairs, told the hearing there were "potentially very serious implications" if the U.S. lost access to rare earths.

"It could interrupt the development of clean energy technologies," Sandalow said. "It could interrupt commerce."

Lifton, the consultant from Michigan, believes the rare earths issue represents "the tip of the iceberg" as China’s ambitions and economy grow rapidly. Similar supply worries could emerge about other high-tech metals that China sends to the world.

"The Chinese are pretty set on moving manufacturing to their country," he said. "They don’t think that’s sinister. That’s just doing business."

____

Associated Press business writers Joe McDonald in Beijing and Yuri Kageyama in Tokyo and AP writers Sangwon Yoon in Seoul and Mari Yamaguchi in Tokyo contributed.

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Iran’s intelligence minister said the country has learned how to fight off a complex computer worm that some foreign experts have speculated was designed to target Tehran’s nuclear program, state television reported Saturday.

Heidar Moslehi was also quoted as saying authorities have arrested several nuclear spies, but he gave no details and it wasn’t clear if the developments were related.

Over recent months, the malicious Stuxnet computer code has also affected industrial systems in India, Indonesia and the U.S. But it has spread the most in Iran, including to several personal computers of workers at Iran’s first nuclear power plant, which is to go online later this year.

The destructive Stuxnet worm has surprised experts because it is the first one specifically created to take over industrial control systems, like those at power plants, rather than just steal or manipulate data.

Moslehi did not reveal where or when the suspected spies were arrested, saying only that Iran has "always faced sabotage" by foreign intelligence services.

Iran periodically announces the arrest of nuclear spies without giving details.

The state TV report did not carry any remarks from Moslehi linking the arrests with the investigation into the computer worm.

"Iran’s intelligence department has found a solution for confronting (the worm) and it will be applied," he was quoted as saying. "Our domination of virtual networks has thwarted the activities of enemies in this regard."

A week ago, Iran said the stuxnet code was found on several laptops belonging to staff at the Bushehr nuclear power plant but that the plant’s main systems were not affected.

The plant has stood outside the current controversy over Iran’s nuclear program since Russia will be providing the fuel for the plant and supervising its disposal.

But other aspects of Iran’s nuclear work, especially its enrichment of uranium, are of concern to the United States and other world powers. Enrichment can be used to produce weapons as well as make fuel for power plants. Iran says it only has peaceful nuclear aims, such as generating electricity.

Who created the Stuxnet code and what its precise target is, if any, remains a mystery.

The web security firm Symantec Corp. says the computer worm was likely spawned by a government or a well-funded private group. It was apparently constructed by a small team of as many as five to 10 highly educated and well-funded hackers, Symantec says.

SEATTLE (AP) — Microsoft Corp. has picked an insider with engineering expertise to head up its Office software division, filling a spot left vacant in September when the most recent president left to become Nokia Corp.’s CEO.

Kurt DelBene, an 18-year Microsoft veteran, was named president of the Microsoft Office division. Most recently, DelBene, 50, led engineering and development for the division that includes the Office desktop programs, SharePoint and the Exchange e-mail system.

DelBene’s role will be slightly narrower than that of his predecessor, Stephen Elop. It won’t include oversight of Microsoft’s business solutions group, which makes financial, supply chain and customer relationship management software. That group will be led by Kirill Tatarinov; both he and DelBene will report directly to CEO Steve Ballmer.

Chris Capossela, DelBene’s peer and a senior marketing and product management executive in the Office group, was also seen as a candidate. He will now report to DelBene.

Matt Rosoff, an analyst for the independent research group Directions on Microsoft, said part of Microsoft’s motivation for the appointment is to make sure it has technical people in leadership positions.

"Internally, Microsoft gets criticism from some employees saying there are too many marketing people in high positions," Rosoff said in an interview. Both Ballmer and Chief Operating Officer Kevin Turner come from sales and marketing backgrounds.

Microsoft is also promoting Andy Lees to president of Microsoft’s phone business and Don Mattrick to president of the group that includes the Xbox game console, the Zune media player and Internet television technology.

Both were senior vice presidents of their respective groups.

The Windows Phone and Xbox efforts were under one umbrella until this spring, when Robbie Bach, the president of the division, retired.

Microsoft’s Xbox group is doing well, with strong console sales and the much-anticipated release of Kinect, a new motion-detecting controller that makes a joystick-style controller unnecessary.

But critics wonder whether Windows Phone 7, Microsoft’s attempt to compete with Apple Inc.’s iPhone and Google Inc.’s Android phone system, is coming too late.

Lees’ promotion indicates Microsoft isn’t planning any big changes in the phone group until it sees how the new system is received in the market, Rosoff said.
