The most significant day this month in Thailand is Her Majesty the Queen of Thailand’s birthday on August 12th. There are events being held throughout Thailand to mark the 83rd birthday of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit. Perhaps unique in the world, the day is also celebrated as Mother’s Day because the Queen has become known as the Mother of the Land, thanks to her numerous royal projects and initiatives. If you have any doubts about the importance of the day; tune into the ‘Bicycle For Mom’ event, just watch a Thai TV station and you are bound to see the light blue event shirts being worn by the presenters.
There are also posters all around Thailand showing the Queen along with His Royal Highness Crown Prince Maha Vajiral who will be bike riding in Bangkok in honour of the Royal Birthday on August 16th. Last year the USA lost its crown as the world’s biggest economy to China, an economic change that is having ramifications worldwide. Just take a look at our story about China’s Megaregions to see how the huge Chinese population is being managed. On the local front Chinese tourism is big business.
Forget about the ‘bad press’ portraying these visitors as lacking in social or cultural sensitivities, the younger millennials and affluent travellers now fuel 20 percent growth in Chinese travellers. These are online savvy, high ap users which really calls for our local service industry to alert to the needs of these high-spending travellers, including online and in the Chinese language.
We hope that you can really celebrate the Queen of Thailand’s birthday, even if bike riding is not your thing. Just remember the appropriate colour of the day is Blue. HM Queen Sirikit’s personal royal standard is blue, representing the day of her birth, Friday. Wear it with respect..
