Durian – also known as the king of fruits – is a local favourite. It is prickly on the outside and soft on the inside; and it is a fruit that you either like or hate, with no middle ground.
With the recent news about the increase in supply of durians and the fall of prices, we can be assured of a bountiful durian season this year. But durian lovers, before we rush ahead to gorge ourselves on this heavenly piece of fruit, take the time to read on the 6 things we are advised not to eat durian with: Ok, we have to admit that some – ok, most – of the items mentioned here are based more on old wives’ tales than scientific study but like the saying goes, better safe than not, right?
Alcohol – Ok, people have been saying that eating durian and drinking alcohol at the same time will kill you. While we are not able to confirm that fatality will occur, we do know that the high sulfur content of durians inhibits the enzyme that helps to break down alcohol in your body by up to 70%. Milk – Durian is also said to inhibit the breakdown of caffeine in the body. It has been said that drinking milk with durian can lead to increased blood pressure and in rare cases, fatal consequences.
Coca Cola – a carbonated drink loaded with caffeine and said to cause cardiac failure when consumed together with durian.
Egg Plant – both durian and egg plant are considered to be ‘heating’ foods; if taken together, they will cause your body to heat up and fall ill.
Crabs – Crabs are said to be extremely ‘cooling’ while durians belongs to the ‘heating’ category; consuming both at the same time will cause your digestive system to be confused and may cause discomfort in your stomach.
Beef and Mutton – these meats are ‘heating’ foods, and when consumed with durian may add to the heat of your body and cause you to fall ill.
