Hydrotherapy has its origins way back in the mid 1800’s. Father Sebastian Kneipp, a 19th century Bavarian monk, is said to be the father of hydrotherapy. Kneipp believed that disease could be cured by using water to eliminate waste from the body. He wrote books on the subject (“My Water Cure”, ”Thus Shalt Thou Live: Hints and Advice for the Healthy and the Sick”) and In 1894 he was called upon to treat Pope Leo XIII. Faithful to Kneipp’s medical advice, the Pope was to govern the Church until the age of 93. I had no idea about this history before visiting Sivaree or even after the visit, until I did a little research.
What I did notice was the reproduction of a very old photo on the wall titled ‘Kneipp Water therapy’. I also noticed the use of Moya Essential Bath Oils (also available for sale) was a feature of the Centre. These products come from Bad Wörishofen, in Bavaria, Germany. Sebastian Kneipp transformed Wörishofen into one of Europe’s largest centres of holistic therapies My point is that the therapies at Sivaree have stood the test of time.
This is no ordinary Spa Centre! The staff couldn’t explain that background in English or the origins of their photo, but after my research I was impressed. I wasn’t really prepared for the ‘water’ aspect of my 2 hour treatment experience. After the required foot bath, the next step was to have a body scrub. Khun Moo, my therapist, gently but firmly applied cooling and slightly abrasive salts to remove skin ‘contaminants’. No matter how many showers or baths you take, you’ll never feel this clean!
Then for the hydrotherapy; it’s been some time since I last had a warm bath, and certainly not with the added pleasure of the bubbling waters from the mat beneath massaging every part of my body – literally very part! Instructions were provided about postures to be taken in the tub, this is intended to be a passive form of exercise as well as just pleasurable. After removing myself from the bath, I was shown the ‘bath ring’ at the high water mark, proof that any ‘skin contaminants’ may have remained after the scrub were now completely removed. Finally a more traditional massage from Khun Moo.
She later mentioned after that I had fallen asleep, something I hadn’t realised; however time had flown by. The earlier bath time had provided the perfect preparation to completely relax and drift off into oblivion. I was also told not to shower after the massage as the light oils she had used were still at work. At the end of my two hour ‘Fin! Program’ (that means Wow!), I emerged ultra-clean, ultra-massaged and ultrarelaxed. At the Sivaree you’ll have the benefits of a timetested form of therapy and something more than your standard spa treatment. Our thanks to Khun Benjawan Ponopaibo for providing this experience.
