Thai street food was just ranked number one in the world by CNN. However, many visitors
to Hua Hin find the idea of street food a little daunting
But thanks to Talay Thai restaurant at the Hyatt Regency Hua Hin, travelers can sample the best of Thai street food in a more controlled environment. Set in three interconnecting beachfront pavilions with a central courtyard, Talay Thai offers authentic Thai cuisine. The home-style cooking brings out savoury and sweet flavours that characterises Thai cuisine. My dining companion and I arrived at the restaurant for their daily Sabai-Sabai promotion just as dusk was setting in. We were served a complimentary bowl of prawn chips, with a creamy, sweet and spicy chilli dipping sauce.
They should bottle the sauce and sell it in their gift shop – it is so tasty. For dinks we went with a promotional Treeline chardonnay. At 200 baht a glass, this Australian wine paired wonderfully with the Thai food. The first dishes we sampled were the Hat Yai-style deep fried chicken (gai tord) and the fried shrimp cakes (tod mun goong) – both a great start to our feast. Next came a bowl of tom yum goong – the ubiquitous spicy and sour prawn soup with lemongrass.
A favourite among foreigners for many years, the Talay version is one not to miss. Of course we had to sample a curry, and the kang phad prik gaeng kari was highly recommended by our server. The tender rock lobster swimming in a rich yellow curry was a savoury triumph with just a hint of heat. Not wanting to leave without trying a Talay Thai Specialty, we ordered the deep-friend sea bass (pla ka pong tord ta krai). The deep fried fish had been removed from the bone for easy eating. The sweet mango sauce with a touch of lemongrass paired perfectly with the fried fish. We finished our meal with a scoop of lemongrass ice cream and scoop of coconut ice cream. I didn’t think I’d have any room left, but I managed… Throughout the meal we were entertained by live music – a lovely duo with a huge repertoire of songs (and they take requests).
