Arriving at the beautiful Anantara Hua Hin Resort at dusk, my dining companion and I were met by Sales & Event Manager extraordinaire Khun Pooky, who promptly led us to the golden sands of the oceanside restaurant Sai Thong.
Surrounded by majestic palms in this open-air eatery, we were seduced by the tranquil gently crashing waves of the Gulf of Thailand throughout our meal. The restaurant specialises in BBQ seafood and imported steaks. Our meal began with Deep-fried Calamari Rings (370 THB) served with a delicious aioli and fresh lemon wedges.
The breading was thick but surprisingly light, and the calamari inside was perfectly tender. Next came the Spanish-inspired Potato Bravas (190 THB). This dish was served in a small cast iron pot and was filled to the brim with potatoes, spicy chorizo sausage and onion, all
topped with an egg before being baked in the oven. Our entrees were two – the Flamed Seafood Wok (2,290 THB) and the Surf ’N’ Turf Platter (1,790 THB). Thankfully Khun Pooky stayed with us during the meal as there was a lot of food to try!
The wok was brought table-side and set ablaze with
flames shooting overhead. Inside were large tiger prawns, rock lobsters, a nice salmon filet, and a whole sea bass. The menu says this item is recommended for sharing, and I concur. The second dish was creatively served on a what resembled a scale. The meats on one plate balanced with the seafood on the other.
The seafood side included rock lobster, a salmon filet, and a whole sea bass. The meat side included a pork steak, German sausage, and bacon-wrapped chicken breast. We did our best to get through both dishes and still ended up with a nice take away package. During the meal, the house band came by to sing a few acoustic songs, and in fact went table to table taking special requests. There is a special Saturday night BBQ seafood buffet at Sai Thong for just 1,490 THB per person.
