Following the win by Australian Andrew Dodt in last year’s inaungural event, fellow countryman Scott Hend held off a fast-finishing Piya Swangarunporn of Thailand to win the 2016 True Thailand Classic presented by Chang by one shot on Sunday 13th March.
The 42-year-old Hend birdied the 14th & 17th holes for a closing four-under par 68 and an 18-under par 270 winning aggregate at Black Mountain Golf Club after Piya set a new course record of 63 in his final round. Belgium’s Thomas Pieters settled for third place following a 68, three strokes behind the new champion while USA’s Peter Uihlein was a further stroke back in fourth. Ten different nationalities featured in the first ten names on the leader board, with eleven in the first thirteen!
“I stuck to my game plan and it came together. Hole 17 was obviously a crucial shot, being tied for the lead and on that tee, you hit a good tee shot you have a chance to get one in front. And on 18, it’s about not messing up the hole.” Even the 2016 Champion Scott Hend commented after day three: “It was a good grind; out of ten, I felt like a two, I felt really tired, no energy”. The day after his win Scott’s energy level was likely to be even lower, but out of 10? ……………….. at least an 11!
Editor’s Note: Overheard from the caddy of a Thailand player who finished off the pace after the first two rounds. “Well my player is going on to the final rounds anyway.” What he didn’t get was that making the cut was for the best scoring 63 players plus ties; not plus Thais! Best final scores of the True Thailand Classic presented by Chang 2016 played at the par 72, 7,492 Yards Black Mountain course:
270 – Scott HEND (AUS) 68-64-70-68.
271 – Piya SWANGARUNPORN (THA) 68-68-72-63.
273 – Thomas PIETERS (BEL) 73-66-66-68.
