A female leopard, estimated to be between six and seven years old, was found deceased near Ban Krang unit in Kaeng Krachan National Park, officials reported on November 2.

The leopard, which had been discovered in critical condition with multiple injuries, succumbed to its wounds following a suspected encounter with other wild animals.

Mr. Somjet Chantan, Director of the Conservation Area Administration Office No. 3 in Phetchaburi, said that park rangers located the animal’s body a short distance from their station.

Veterinarian Mr. Anurak Sukulpong, alongside the district veterinary staff, performed an examination and determined that the leopard had sustained a total of 42 wounds from bites and scratches across its body, indicative of violent skirmishes with other animals. The combined factors of infection and malnutrition were concluded to be the cause of death.

Offiials said that camera trap studies from 2013 to 2023 have monitored the leopard and black panther populations, estimated to number around 10 in the Ban Krang – Pha Nern Thung region. Park officials are currently scrutinizing photographs to identify the deceased individual.

The leopard (Panthera pardus Linnaeus), known for its solitary and adaptable nature, thrives in diverse habitats ranging from dense forests to more open landscapes, provided there is cover. The species, which endures high temperatures and can sustain itself away from water sources, is recognized for its intelligence and hunting prowess.

Officials said the leopard was later buried with lime to prevent any potential disease transmission, adhering to scientific and conservation guidelines.
