The proposed reopening of Hua Hin to international tourists could be postponed to November 1, according to a spokesperson for the Tourism Authority of Thailand.
Thanet Phetsuwan, deputy director for communications and marketing at the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) told Thai language daily Khaosod that the reopening plan for five locations in Thailand, which includes Hua Hin and Cha Am, could be delayed over concerns regarding vaccination rates.
Mr Thanet’s comments came after the TAT held a meeting with a working group from the Ministry of Public Health regarding the proposed reopening plans, which are due to be put before the CCSA for approval on September 23.
The working group reportedly said that 70% of the local population must be vaccinated against COVID-19. There are also said to be concerns regarding the COVID-19 situation in Thailand, with the country still reporting in excess of 10,000 new cases per day.
The vaccination rollout in Hua Hin has gathered considerable pace in recent weeks and while over 70% of the local population have received one vaccine dose, as of September 15, just 36.76% of the local population had been fully vaccinated having received two doses.
Meanwhile, a senior health official on Wednesday said that the number of new daily COVID-19 cases in Thailand is not likely to fall further due to the easing of restrictions and the resumption of business and activities.
Dr. Kiatiphum Wongrajit, permanent secretary for public health, said the new cases were likely to remain at about 10,000 a day and would not drop further because some disease control measures were lifted to support economy and workers.
Dr. Kiatiphum urged members of the public to continue to following the guidelines issued by the Ministry of Public Health in order to protect themselves from COVID-19.
