Authorities in Hua Hin have taken steps towards creating a new Division of Tourism and Sports, aimed at strengthening the city’s position as a year-round destination for both domestic and international visitors.
On 18 July, Hua Hin Mayor Nopporn Wuttikul appointed Mr. Jirawat Phramanee, Permanent Secretary of Hua Hin City Municipality, and officials from the Human Resources Division to meet with Petty Officer First Class Somchai Siangyai, the Provincial Local Administration Officer of Prachuap Khiri Khan. Also present at the meeting were representatives from the Local Personnel Management Standards Group at the Office of Local Administration in Prachuap Khiri Khan.
The meeting focused on discussing the necessary administrative steps to expand the municipal staffing framework and formally establish a division specifically tasked with overseeing tourism and sports.
Municipal officials said the move reflects the city’s long-term strategy to further develop its tourism sector, recognising Hua Hin as a well-established destination capable of attracting visitors throughout the year.
The plan also follows Hua Hin’s recent upgrade to city municipality status, which came into effect on 28 March 2025. The status change, formalised in a Royal Gazette announcement published in late 2024, grants the municipality increased autonomy, higher budget allocations, and enhanced administrative capabilities.
Since the upgrade, Hua Hin City Municipality has revised electoral zones, added municipal personnel, and undertaken internal restructuring to accommodate its expanded responsibilities. The proposed Division of Tourism and Sports would support this ongoing transition by focusing on tourism development, sports promotion, and the management of events and related infrastructure.
Officials believe the new division will allow for more targeted planning and coordination of activities aimed at attracting visitors and supporting the local economy. In recent months, there have also been early-stage discussions about seeking a special legal designation for Hua Hin, similar to that held by Pattaya, which would grant the city greater flexibility in managing tourism and economic initiatives.
The proposal is currently under review, with municipal leaders expected to continue consultations with relevant agencies before submitting a formal request for approval.
