The FIFA World Cup 2014 is underway with the elimination of half the qualifying countries and the commencement of the ‘Round of Sixteen’. We have all the results of the elimination round and the qualifying team fixtures. One of the big surprises so far was the failure of world champions Spain to continue on to the next round. However the followers of countries such as Costa Rica are jubilant, with results exceeding expectations.
The highlight of the opening round (for some) was the 5-1 win by the Netherlands over Spain. The Netherlands were tipped by some to have little chance but with this performance they have certainly made many others sit up and take notice. The goal of the opening round was arguably Tim Cahill’s volley in Australia’s 2-3 loss to The Netherlands. Cahill said he didn’t expect to score, thinking the ball was heading straight for the keeper!
