October 23, 2011 will mark the 100th years for the death of King Chulalongkorn or King Rama V of the current Chakri Dynasty, Hua Hin will organize a commemoration ceremony at the auditorium of Hua Hin School.
Starting at 8 a.m., this event highlights wreath and garland presenting by local people, governmental and private staff to pay homage to the great king of Thailand. Then, people will give words of praise.
According to Mr. Somchai Bamrungsap, the Hua Hin District Chief, King Chulalongkorn is one of the greatest kings of Thailand whose lifetime dedication contributed overwhelmingly to Thailand and Thai people. The 4th son of King Rama IV, King Rama V modernized the country in several ways. Court systems were modified during his reign with establishment of the Justice Ministry. Education was not limited to aristocrats or elites but extended to local people. A teacher training school was set up at the same time of the Education Ministry. Thai students could go to further their study in Europe. Railways from Bangkok were expanded to other provinces like Nakorn Ratchasima. Trams were introduced for the first time in Bangkok as well as postal services and water supply.
Above all, the greatest contribution King Chulalongkorn made to all Thais is abolishing slavery as it clearly shows his concern on human rights and people equality regardless of social class, race and gender. Consequently, Thai people called him Phra Piya Maharat or the most beloved king of Siam.
Given great intelligence and ability on national administration of King Rama V, the Hua Hin Municipality would like to invite all local people and office staff to attend the commemoration day at the above-mentioned date and time.
