Foreigners sending parcels through Thailand Post are now required to show their ID cards or passports before parcels will be accepted for delivery.

Mrs. Waraporn Chaitiamwong, Manager of Organisational Communications of the Thailand Post, said that the new measure was is in line with a policy of the Prime Minister’s Office concerning the prevention and suppression of narcotic drugs and the use of postal services for delivery. The policy categorizes package delivery businesses as establishments under strict narcotic controls and obligated to record the identity of every customer. Thailand Post reiterated that narcotic drugs are illegal and cannot be delivered by post. If detected in any package, the items may be confiscated for use as evidence for legal action against the sender.

This policy is described by Thailand Post as a new rule for foreigners. Our enquiries suggest that Thai people are inconsistently been asked to provide their identification. Whether the measure will mean the compulsory provision of identification for everyone remains unclear.
