A young Thai man has tasted victory at the National Crossword Puzzle Championships at The Mall in Bangkapi, Bangkok.

Defending champion Tawan Sunathvanichkul won the two-day contest and took home the 25,000 THB prize. English Bangkok resident Gerry Carter, 55, was his main opponent up until the final round. The puzzle fest featured more than just English language crossword puzzles though. It also offered competitions in completing Thai crosswords, Scrabble in both English and Thai, Sudoku number puzzles and more. Of the 2,000 people that came to watch and play, there were many young students who enjoyed trying out the games on both small boards and a life-size board set up at The Mall, reported ThaiVisa. Word games, especially Scrabble and crosswords, have legions of fiercely competitive fans and players in Thailand. In July, the country hosts King’s Cup, an annual competition where the highestranking global Scrabble players come to Bangkok to compete at their beloved word game.
