Vonn leads 2nd downhill training at Val d’Isere

VAL D’ISERE, France (AP) — Lindsey Vonn of the United States led the second training session for a World Cup downhill event on Thursday in the French Alps.

Vonn, who dominated Wednesday’s first training on the Oreiller-Killy course, finished in 1 minute, 44.67 seconds, 0.22 seconds ahead of Elisabeth Goergl of Austria.

Goergl prevented Vonn from winning three straight races this month in Lake Louise, Canada, when she narrowly beat her rival in a super-G. Vonn won two consecutive downhills in the Canadian Rockies.

Anna Fenninger of Austria was third in the second training run, 0.57 seconds off the pace.

Vonn is returning to Val d’Isere where she won two world titles this year in downhill and super-G.

The 25-year-old Vonn registered disappointing results last week in Are, Sweden, where she finished eighth in a slalom and skied out in a giant slalom to slip to second place in the overall standings behind Maria Riesch of Germany. Riesch, who is Vonn’s friend and rival, has 441 points to Vonn’s 421.

Riesch finished ninth in training at 1:45.91.

A super combined is scheduled for Friday in Val d’Isere ahead of Saturday’s downhill. A super-G will be held Sunday.
