Vehicle owners will be unable to renew their registration licenses if they fail to pay traffic fines. The new measures, which come into force on 1 July, have been announced by the Land Transport Department (LTD) and Royal Thai Police, in a bid to crackdown on motorists who fail to pay traffic fines. The authorities have revealed they are using a new shared database that will help identify those who ignore traffic tickets.
“We are introducing this measure to prevent motorists from ignoring tickets issued by traffic police,” LTD deputy director-general Chantira Parutpat told The Nation. Officials say that the problem of motorists failing to pay traffic tickets is widespread, with some 5. 4 million tickets remaining unpaid to date.
The result of this is a huge loss of revenue for the state. “People will be able to check whether they have had tickets pending if they use an app provided by police,” Chantira said. There will also be a large scale promotional campaign over the coming weeks and months warning motorists of serious consequences if they fail to pay traffic tickets. Motorists will be asked to pay any outstanding traffic tickets when they renew their vehicle registration licenses. “If they don’t pay fines, we won’t approve the renewal.”
