Prachuab Nun Bestowed Honoured PHD.

The Rattanakosin Rajamangala Technological University has bestowed a Ph.D. degree to a nun in Prachuab Khirikhan, honouring her invaluable contribution to Buddhism. Congratulated by Thai universities, schools, public offices and Buddhists, she is the first female priest in the province to receive this honourary degree.

According to the President of Rattanakosin Rajamangala Technological University Asst. Prof. Siwa Sutharaphiwat, the Faculty of Hotel and Tourism Industry already bestowed the Ph. D. in tourism to Ms. Phathu Huadhin, also known as Mae Chee Lek (Nun Lek), from Wat Suk Samran Buddhist Temple in Hua Hin on 13 December 2013.

Mae Chee Lek has stayed at Wat Suk Samran since Venerable Samran was the temple’s Abbot. In 2012, she was a part of the temple members who successfully mobilised the temple to become the major Buddhist temple of Hua Hin. She also published a book on Thai herbal medicineand helped building and renovating two Buddhist temples: Wat Tham Khao Noi in Kui Buri and Wat Khao Tao. She also helped upgrade Wat Suk Samran as a learning center on ethics and morality, and worked as a trainer on Buddhism for the Dhamma Youth Preservationists at many schools and universities every year.

In terms of other social and public works, Mae Chee Lek has constantly provided financial support for learning and teaching materials at schools, universities, municipal and district offices. She also made donations to Klai Kangwon School, Princess Mother’s Medical Volunteer Foundation, Buddhist Monk Foundation of Hua Hin Hospital and a new patient building of Chulalongkorn Hospital. Thanks to her great contribution on social and public works, His Majesty the King has recently given her the Knight Commander (Second Class) of the Most Admirable Order of the Direkgunabhorn.

Mae Chee Lek has also co-organised with academics and Buddhist monks a trip for Thai Buddhist to historical sites where the Lord Buddha was born, gained enlightenment and passed away in India, Nepal and Sri Lanka. The upcoming trip will be on 5 February 2014. A very inquisitive person, she already visited Europe, Indonesia, Vietnam, Myanmar and Singapore to study about local people’s lifestyle and the world heritage sites of those places.

Asst. Prof. Siwa said that Mae Chee Lek was happy to help the university, particularly for the program on Thai civilization and Buddhist heritage for tourism apart from giving financial support for the students and research scholarships for the lecturers. Deeply grateful for her contribution, the Rattanakosin Rajamangala Technological University has therefore bestowed her the Honoured Ph.D. degree.

After Mae Chee Lek received the Degree, she was congratulated by many distinguished people of Hua Hin, especially the mayor of Hua Hin Mr. Nopporn Wutthikul and the Hua Hin District Chief Mr. Pornchai Thomkrajang.
