September trial date set for Russian arms suspect

NEW YORK (AP) — A former Soviet military officer accused of offering to sell weapons to a terrorist group will be tried in federal court in New York in September.

The trial date of Sept. 12 was set during a hearing in Manhattan on Friday for Viktor Bout (boot).

Bout was extradited to the U.S. from Thailand two months ago.

The Russian government has complained that his extradition was unlawful and political. The 43-year-old Bout has pleaded not guilty. His wife was in court Friday and he winked at her as he entered the courtroom.

He remains held without bail. Bout has been dubbed the "Merchant of Death" for allegedly selling an arsenal of weapons to small countries around the world.
