The Mayor of Hua Hin Mr. Nopporn Wutthikul recently described arrangements for the Songkran Festival or the Thai New Year Celebrations that will take place between 13th and 16th April 2013 at the Phon Kingphet Memorial Park.

Traditionally the beginning of the Thai New Year is on 13th April each year.  As Thailand is located in a tropical zone and most people are free from agricultural work because it is the dry and hot Season  This means that making  merit to welcome  the dawn of the New Year and splashing  water on one another helps people to cool themselves down in the hottest month of the year.

In Hua Hin the Songkran Festival aims to foster traditional Thai culture and express gratitude to seniors as well as allowing both Thais and foreigners to join the festive activites together.

On 13th April there will be a big Songkran parade.  Bathing Phra Buddha Sihing or a Buddha image is known to bring good luck to those who show respect.  Pouring water on the hands of municipal executives to ask them for best wishes and splashing water is a part of this tradition. On 14th April, there will be a beauty pageant.   On 16th April, a ceremony to pay homage to the famous Hua Hin native boxer Phon Kingphet will be held along with a presentation of honorary awards to sports people who contributed to sports in Thailand. Local people and visitors are welcome to join the event, but they are kindly asked to splash  water with caution and not to harm others. For more information on this event, please contact the Education Division of Hua Hin Municipality at tel. 032 532 433 ext. 402-403.
