Hua Hin Municipality is preparing for the annual Buddhist Lent Ceremony, the tradition that marks the long standing of Buddhism in Thailand, said the Hua Hin Mayor Mr. Nopporn Wutthikul.
The Buddhist Lent usually starts in July to October every year and has been for a long time initiated since the Buddha period. At this time Buddhist monks usually travelled from one place to another on foot even in the rainy season. Sometimes they might step on crops or animals of farmers. After the Lord Buddha acknowledged the farmers’ complaints, he decided to ask all Buddhist monks to stay at temples for three months. During the period of the Buddhist Lent, Buddhists will offer candles to temples or Buddhist monks, believing that the candles symbolise intelligence, brightness and wisdom.
Realizing the importance of the Buddhist Lent, the Hua Hin Municipality is organizing a Buddhist Lent Ceremony on 18th and 19th July. On 18th July. Buddhists will make a big candle together at Queen Sirikit’s Memorial Park. They will enjoy stage performances of municipal students and a concert of Ord 4S after the official opening ceremony at 8 p.m. On 19th July, there will be a big procession to carry the candle to Buddhist monasteries in Hua Hin at Phon Kingphet Memorial Park.
All local people in Hua Hin and tourists are invited to take part in this Buddhist event together. Please contact the Education Division of Hua Hin Municipality at tel. 032 532 433 ext. 402-403 for more information.
