Welcoming the Bilingual Program First Student Intake

By the time you are reading this edition of Hua Hin Today, first yearstudents at the Hua Hin campus of Stamford International University will have commenced their first term of studyin Stamford’s brand new Bilingual Program.  On July 1st this significant addition to the University’s prospectus commences as a real contribution towards Thailand’s preparation for the ASEAN future with students being equipped with the English language skills necessary for our future leaders.

We visited Stamford to discuss with the Assistant President, Khun Ekkapong Na Ranong and Admissions Coordinator, Ms Pikul (Pam) Tasing, the benefits available to students and to get a real flavour of the Bilingual Program.   Khun Ekkapong is clearly very enthusiastic about the Program launch which he describes as a unique learning opportunity only available at Stamford.  He has his own ‘bilingual history’ with an education background from Geelong Grammar School in Australia and Clark University in Massachusetts USA!

What is The Bilingual Program?

The basic strategy for this Program is to increase the English language skills of students and their confidence to use English for study progressively each year of their degree.  At the final stages their level of competence in English will equip them for a bilingual (Thai/English) employment future on the international stage.

Initially intensive study of English is combined with other subjects taught in Thai.  However as the years progress and the student’s knowledge and confidence in using English increases, more subjectsbecome taught in English to the point that English becomes their primary study language.  The Bilingual Program becomes a separate study stream after the first year of study as an option to the usual Thai language content of mainstream programs.

Year One – 20% English

Year Two –  55% English

Year Three –  95% English

Year Four  – 95% English

General education courses in Thai language with intensive English Courses to improve and polish English skills.

English language skills continue to improve while beginning to use English in some core subjects.

Confident to use English in an exclusively English curriculum.

English language proficiency is at a level required to work in a multi-cultural workplace.

Students who can see the potential employment advantages of being fully competent in English for their participation in an ASEAN future will recognise the advantages of this program option.  Students (and parents) considering this Program may obtain the full details by visiting the Hua Hin campus.

The next intake will commence at the end of October with registrations accepted until mid-October.  We feel confident that as the word spreads the Bilingual Program will become a much sought after option for forward thinking Thai students!
